new experience, new perspective

John & I are honored to be a part - however minor - of helping an older friend move from his beloved home of 50+ years to his daughter's wonderful & welcoming house, a county down & many cities', towns' distance away.

We expected it to be a bittersweet experience - what was a "fixer-upper with a lot of potential" is now eagerly eyed by potential buyers - but neither of us expected to feel it so...  it's hard to describe.  We didn't expect sensing the house as a living, breathing friend.  Which it is.

The LP collection is gone, the DVDs are safe with us.  The books are divvied up between boxes for the new residence, old friends & former art students.  But you can feel the house alive with all the moments & people of a half century of LIFE.

Richard says the celebrations scheduled for later this week, this month, are a housecooling.  Our hope is that he someday can feel what he might be too close to experience right now - the house loving him, thanking him for such a great run, for fondue parties in the kitchen, unforgettable suppers around the big wooden table, poetry readings by the fire, al fresco entertaining on the patio, and countless movie nights.

The house will always be part of Richard & he will always be part of it.  Some connections are never broken.

For all my life, I've heard "Home is where the heart is."  Experiencing this has been eye- & heart- & spirit-opening.  Now, I know that when you truly love a house, that home is in your heart forever.  As you will forever be in its.
