Is the weekend of 01/08 considered last weekend, or "two weekends back"? Is yesterday part of "last weekend" or "this past weekend"? Or both? I haven't a clue!
In any case, I went to Nancy Slonim Aronie's 01/08-10/16 writing workshop at Rowe Conference Center. What a great range of ages, from twenties through seventies! At almost 64, taking my lead from a 74-year old fearless leader, I gloried in my first writer's workshop - Jumpstart Your Memoir: the next step.
"The next step"? I hadn't even taken my first!
But I sure did. Wrote four short stories. Two were deeply rooted in my past, one was a shout-out to feeling liberated from old limiting gunk, and the fourth... Well, the fourth was the most fun, the most honest, the most ME. And it's short enough to include here. The prompt was "Write about a time you weren't invited."
The Wan, Wistful Woman

Once upon a time, a wan, wistful woman lived in a teeny
tiny town. Every day, she wished &
she wished & she wished that the town folk would invite her to join a BIG
IMPORTANT committee or one of their comfy cozy circles of friends.
They never did.
Then, one day, everything changed. Everything changed, thanks to flour, sugar
& buttercream. Flour, sugar & buttercream transformed the once wan, wistful
woman into AUNT DEEV. With the wave of a wooden spoon, she became the Cupcake Lady
of Bryn Athyn Bounty Farm Market! One mini cupcake, one frosting, one candy
embellishment - $1. $3 – one standard
cupcake, one frosting, three candy embellishments.
The once wan, wistful woman found herself the
darling of toddlers, tweens & teens, parents & grandparents alike!
From the first Saturday in May to a final Saturday
tucked deep in the middle of October, you’ll find Aunt Deev under a ruby red
canopy, helping decorate dozens of cupcakes, surrounded by happy faces &
laughing friends.
If you ever find yourself near Bryn Athyn from
early May to middish October, you’re invited stop by & to pay the no longer
wan, wistful woman a friendly visit – Aunt Deev will happily help you decorate one
cupcake with one frosting & as
many candy embellishments as you wish!
