Something I learned back in my elementary school teaching days stood me in good stead as Mom grew older & more reluctant to go out during cold weather - target January as a month for lots of visits or other contact, fresh flowers, lots of light & as much laughter as possible.
And turn off the television set! A lot of oldersters get through January by watching tv - it's bright, it's active, but it is lethal to keeping in good spirits.
Help them find a radio station they like, download a collection of their favorite music on an iPod, plan a movie festival for the month that's loaded with comedies.
If they are home-bound, "bring a party" to them. Do your best to get other family members & friends to send newsy letters, photos, audio or video tapes.
If they love to read, make sure they have books & magazines to read. Eyesight problems? Books on tape or download.
It is much easier to keep spirits raised through February if you start right off the bat, keeping January well-stocked with things to do & especially a ready smile. If you, like I, spend a lot of time in a family member or friend's senior residence, be sure to keep a smile on your face, to wave at people you sort of know & greet the ones you know by name. If you are friends with any, put a hand on their shoulder, however briefly. Even folks who bristle often appreciate being acknowledged.
There are several male residents at a grannie client's residence that I regularly give a kiss. And I always ask first if it's alright. They like to be asked almost as much as being kissed, lightly on the head or check.
Target January to bring & spread as much sunshine, especially with oldsters, as you can. It will help make their month brighter - and yours, too!
