Shrug off time

Whether you were one of her children, a friend or the merest acquaintance of Mom's, one of the greatest lessons learned from her is that it's never too late, we are never time-restricted from achieving the most wondrous results.  

Mom was in her late 80s when she first sought counseling because, as she described it, "I don't have a clue who I am."  She'd learn to have a sense of ease with herself, the ability to step back & detach from the emotional turmoil of the moment, to start getting a glimmering that it's okay to see the human foibles of others rather than sticking smiley faces over everything.   

It took me until my mid 60s to have a genuinely enjoyable relationship with my oldest brother.  We actually talk about real things, things that matter, even things related to our family (which is huge)!  

An experience last night is becoming our norm.  Peter brought up something about one of our sibs that had bugged him for years.  I knew what he was describing & had - many decades ago - groused about it to Mom, who shared her take on the situation.  Last night, I shared that with Peter, who had the same "Oh, that makes sense" response I'd had long long ago.

It was quite the experience - talking to my brother, sharing ancient words from Mom, sensing they had the same impact on him they'd had on me, giving insight & understanding to what had been an irksome reaction to someone else's behavior.  Sweet, very sweet.

Oh, the wonders that can unfold when we shrug off time & expectations, letting events moments awareness unfold!
