Facebook friends have been all atwitter over reports out of the UK that drinking three glasses of champagne can help alleviate dementia & Alzheimer's disease plus protect against other memory loss. Alas, turns out that the 2013 study linked results to spatial memory, not cognitive. Double alas - consuming too much alcohol actually speeds up congnitive decline.
My thanks to the Huffington Post for reminding us of seven things that actually can strengthen & improve our memory:
- Getting 7-9 hours of sleep helps our brains process info gathered throughout the day into our longterm memory.
- Doodling helps us remember better by keeping our brain active, less likely to tune out what's going on around us.
- Healthy diet makes a difference! Seems that a gene which may contribute to Alzheimer's lurks within high saturated fats, while mono & polyunsaturated fats - fruits, veggies, fish & nuts - help improve memory.
- Don't smoke. Scientists have linked smoking with a higher risk of Alzheimer's.
- For countless reasons - exercise! It helps create new brain cells. For all the other benefits, do an online search of exercise & memory.
- Sure surprised me - avoid multitasking. (Yikes!) We need environments that support encourage nurture memory function. Makes sense, but I never thought about it.
- No brainer - living a healthy lifestyle. Okay, this doesn't guarantee you won't suffer from brain disease or memory problems, but it sure does reduce the risk.
My thanks to the Facebook friends who shared reports about champagne alleviating memory challenges. While it turns out the reports are all fizz, no substance, the postings sent me researching the claim & stumbling across these seven simple things that can make a difference. Cheers!
